Jaap Stam believes Donny van de Beek’s eagerness to attack could be the reason he was overlooked at Old Trafford this season. Van de Beek left Manchester United on loan in the January transfer window after having limited playing time.
After spending two years at United and failing to make an impact under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer or interim manager Ralf Rangnick. Van de Beek joined Everton on loan in the January transfer window. The 24-year-old has been an overlooked figure since he joined Ajax in September 2020.
At the start of the season, the midfielder joined Everton. However, things at Goodison Park haven’t been pleasant with Frank Lampard’s side fighting for their lives against relegation. United’s former defender Jaap Stam, worked with Van de Beek at Ajax. Believes he might not have played enough because of his attack-mindedness. Van de Beek, Stam believes, was not utilized to his full potential when he was involved.
The former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam contends ‘the manager has to make the choice to play him as one of the two defensive midfielders when he could help in the build-up and play higher. Stam added: ‘The manager had to make the choice to play him as one of the two defensive midfielders so that he could help in the build-up and play higher’. In the past, Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes were next to each other.
Jaap Stam slams Manchester United
Van de Beek still has a chance to succeed at United. Despite the instability that has affected the club’s chances in recent years, believes Stam, who helped win the treble during his Old Trafford tenure. “It all depends on chance what they show.”
“I think for Donny, he didn’t get enough chances to show himself, because it’s not only about getting one game or a couple of minutes”, Jaap Stam told bettingexpert.
In addition to working hard and running a lot, Donny is also good on the ball. He can play many positions. As a backward builder, he possesses the content to play box-to-box. His role, however, was not assigned to him.
Jaap Stam thinks Man Utd should’ve trusted Van de Beek more rather than taking him out of the team after one negative performance. Since Van de Beek has started more games for Everton since he joined on loan from United.
